Back to School Already? – How Time Flies!

It’s hard to believe that we are already at the end of summer. Now families are rushing to take that last weekend trip to the beach and moms are jumping into school mode, shopping for the kids’ new clothes and school supplies. My, how the time is flying by!

Just as families have been tending to those end-of-summer chores, we have been busy adding fun things to our reunion. Can you believe we are only 80 days away? It may sound like it is still pretty far off, but it will be here before we know it! We are now in high gear with planning those all-important details to make sure that this is going to be a reunion to be remembered for years to come!

Cookbooks
We are happy to announce that we have surpassed our 2018 cookbook goal with 300 recipes ― representing 17 immigrant lines from nearly 100 submitters. Thank you to all who contributed!

This is so much more than just a cookbook! It is truly a family heirloom! Similar to our 2010 edition; however, we’ve added several exciting features:

  • “Remember When” family remembrances and tributes to loved ones (prepare to smile, laugh and cry)
  • Memorial icons, commemorating those contributors who are no longer with us
  • Updated brief Roederer History (lots of new discoveries in 8 years)
  • A Signature Recipe of a dish to be served at our Saturday evening German feast
  • Recipes straight from the old country with translations
  • All 4 of the main European Roederer branches represented
  • Nearly half the recipes have family anecdotes

There are only a few 2010 cookbooks left. Order yours today before they’re all gone. With both cookbooks, you will have over 500 recipes of Roederer families’ best!

Patti and crew are in the proofing process now for Vol. 2 and will be sending it to print shortly. Several weeks lead time is required by the printer so the deadline for ordering cookbooks is approaching fast, Aug. 31st. So don’t delay! Remember, these make great Christmas gifts and when you order 4, the 5th is FREE!! All orders are PICK UP ONLY at the reunion ― no mailing option at this time. The Reunion Store is ready to take your order ― it is just a click away. https://squareup.com/store/roederer  The link is also on the website.

NEW ITEM!
Self-Guided Ancestral Cemetery Tour Book

Looking for something to do in between or after the reunion events? We’ve got just the thing ― meet your immigrant ancestor! We have put together a guide for you to do just that.

One of the most important places that a genealogist will visit while researching is a cemetery. It’s amazing how much information one can glean from a single tombstone. And for me, it is the closest tangible object to actually “meet” an ancestor. Cave Hill Cemetery, alone, is the final resting place for about 100 Roederers and hundreds of allied descendants. It is also noted as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. Cave Hill is a sculpture garden, an arboretum, a nature preserve, virtual history lesson and cemetery ― all rolled into one. This is one special place!

Louisville and Jeffersonville have 6 cemeteries where our ancestors can be found. This easy-to-follow guide includes:

  • Location and brief history of each cemetery; including famous and notable people also buried there
  • Listing of immigrants buried in each cemetery with brief bio of each ancestor (occupation, cause of death, number of kids/descendants)
  • Cemetery Section Maps and marked Plot Maps for easy search

The Ancestral Cemetery Tour Guide is available for pre-order now in the Roederer Reunion Store for $15. But if you order by Aug 31st, the bargain price is only $8.

Honor your immigrant ancestor and learn more about them with a visit to his/her final resting place.

T-Shirts & Charts
So far, the two most popular items in our Store are the T-shirts and Family Genealogy Charts. To make sure that these items (and cemetery guide) are available in time, all orders must be placed no later than Oct. 1st
So don’t wait… order now!

You Asked and We Deliver!
As mentioned earlier, many of you have been asking about genealogy research ― where to begin, what records are available, how to organize your findings…? Genealogy research can be overwhelming, confusing, frustrating AND absolute fun! There can be no greater feeling of accomplishment than when you break through that brick wall, open up new avenues of research AND find new cousins.

On Saturday, Nov 3rd, our St. Louis cousin, Linda Pennington, and I will be presenting “Looking into Your Past”, a genealogy seminar, to the first 25 people who sign up. Read “The Linda Story” in the previous Springtime Newsletter edition to learn how Linda joined our Louisville family. http://mailchi.mp/c2dc28346fd9/springtime-early-bird-extended

Our 2-hour class will be half instructive ― full of tips and do’s and don’ts of genealogy research; while the second half will be Q & A. YOU have the floor to ask for help on what is most important in YOUR research. Take home the course booklet and dive into your family research.

Space is limited to 25 participants. So don’t delay… First come, first served.
For more information and class registration, click the link Roederer Reunion StoreAll Reunion information can found all in one place at www.RoedererReunion.com.

That’s all the news for now. Oh wait… there is one more thing to mention ― the Silent Auction! Well, all I can say right now is…

JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE SURPRISES WE HAVE FOR YOU!!!

Stay tuned for a glimpse in the next newsletter!

Roederer Reunion – Change Can Be Good

Change can be good… but for us, change is fantastic!!! The last couple of weeks have been quite the roller coaster ride! There are two fairly significant modifications in our schedule of events.

We began negotiations for reunion venues and host hotels nearly a year ago. This is usually advantageous; however, things can change drastically in a year’s time. Unfortunately, that is the case with the Ramada Plaza. With some intense detective work (long distance and boots on the ground), I discovered why our wonderful sales rep suddenly quit, emails/phone calls were not being answered, appointments were not being kept and the hotel was falling into serious disrepair since my site visit 3 short months ago. The property is changing flagships and will be undergoing extensive renovation starting in October.

Sadly, I was compelled to immediately terminate our contract with this hotel. After 10 long minutes of experiencing every emotion imaginable, including severe panic, I remembered my backup plan and immediately jumped into high gear!

Now the good news! We have renegotiated the contract with our secondary host hotel just across the street, Holiday Inn East. They are bending over backwards for us, including lowering their rates even further than the original quoted discount. I’m happy to report that every one of our out-of-towners is happily secured in this beautiful, newly-renovated, property. I know everyone will be more than pleased with the accommodations and overwhelmingly friendly service.

Our Friday night Meet and Greet has been moved to Holiday Inn’s lovely Atrium and Winner’s Circle Lounge. Same time, 6:00-9:00 PM. And, even better ― the hotel has offered to stock the bar with a variety of delicious German beers! Now THAT’S customer service!

At the same time as the hotel debacle, I received a call from our Churchill Downs rep, “There’s an issue with Skye Terrace 4 for your Sunday event”. My heart sank and my stomach was now in my throat. This can’t be happening!

Now for the FANTASTIC news… we have been invited to the brand-new Starting Gate Suites with 11 corporate suites and huge, elegant dining room… ALL exclusively for our Roederer clan. Some of you Louisvillians have “been there, done that” at Churchill Downs dozens of times. Well, here’s your chance to have a brand new experience at the track ― feel like a high- roller while entering any of the luxurious suites and elegant dining area, taking in the great views, and placing your bets without leaving that comfy couch! The top banner gives you a sneak peek into one of the suites.

This is the perfect setup for the kids ― their own supervised suite, complete with an assortment of games, toys, fun activities and even the Disney Channel playing on their private TV.

This area is over 25,000 sq. ft. that can accommodate over 600 comfortably. Want to be in the middle of the large group and meet as many cousins as you can? Or would you like to have a quieter place to visit with that special relative you haven’t seen in decades? Take your pick ― the experience is yours to enjoy to its fullest!

Normally, it is a challenge to plan an event such as this long distance! But when you have a team of family members who jump in at a moment’s notice like I have had during this trying time… well, this is what this event is all about ―bringing families together! I am humbled and truly blessed!

A big thank you hug to my “boots on the ground cousins” (you know who you are)! I couldn’t have gotten through these past couple of weeks without you!

The website www.RoedererReunion.com has been updated with the new lodging information and the updated schedule of events. If you have previously printed out a schedule/lodging sheet, please discard it and print out the updated version. Don’t forget to print the revised copy for those older folks who do not have computers.

The website is the place to find Reunion Registration, easy online payment, past postings and access to the Roederer Reunion Store. Items are already flying off the shelves!

Happy 4th of July – Let Freedom Ring!

Happy 4th of July to Everyone! Let the fireworks begin!

This year our country is 242 years old. Fifty-six men signed their names to a document that set our country free and started this great adventure. In 1836, the first Diersburg Roederers set sail for America in search for a better life… one that embodied FREEDOM! Political freedom, freedom of religion, freedom to own land, and freedom from hunger and poverty. The wave of Roederer freedom-seekers continued for another 120 years! The first Roederer arrived in Louisville over 165 years ago and this area continues to be home to the highest concentration of Roederers and their descendants in the entire US.

As we celebrate our nation’s independence on July 4th, we will be celebrating our family in November in Louisville. Much planning has been taking place for our reunion and many exciting things are in the works. So much news to share in this issue… Special Birthday, Volunteers, Cookbook, “Remember When…” Family Stories, and the Online Store.

Happy 100th Birthday!
Congratulations to Art Raderer, of Louisville, who turned 100 years young on May 22nd! Come meet our only living centenarian Roederer, learn why and when his branch changed the name, thank him for his service in WWII and hear stories of what life was like nearly 100 years ago. He’s truly an amazing man and we are honored that he will be joining us!

It is often said, “It takes a village”. So too, organizing this event takes the talents and commitments of many villagers. Thank you to all who have already come forward to help in so many ways. We still are in need of a few more volunteers:

  • Any shutterbugs in the family? We need 2-3 photographers to record the weekend of events. We will post the pictures on the Reunion website.
  • We would like to do a Memorial Tribute to those who have passed away since our last reunion. Becky Ettel Burnard has volunteered and is in need of someone to work with her on this special project. We’ve got some ideas, but want to hear yours. Email Becky at bburnard@gmail.com.

We are currently only 30 recipes shy for our new goal of 300 recipes for the Roederer Family Heirloom Cookbook, Vol. II. We have over 75 submitters from 15 different immigrant lines. Quite a good representation! We are hoping to represent all 20 immigrant lines that we are calling together for this reunion. Patti has done an amazing job on this and we know everyone will be so pleased with the final product.

There is still time to get those yummy recipes in before the book goes to print. Remember to add any anecdotes. So find your grandma’s favorite recipe or the family recipe that you love the best and send those to patti.jako@gmail.com.
Final deadline is July 15th!

The “Remember When” section of the cookbook will be just a small sampling of what is in store in the post-reunion publication of interesting, funny and touching family remembrances. Every family has great stories and they are begging to be shared! Some family stories tend to get exaggerated over the generations (a few of mine sure have); however, we’d like these family tales to be as factual as possible.
How about some memory ticklers…
Your first car… Favorite vacation… Christmas tradition… Most memorable birthday.

Looking through old family pictures can be a wonderful and fun trigger for those memories you hadn’t thought about in years or decades. A huge “Thank You” to all submitters so far and to those who have attached a picture with your story ―bringing those memories to life for everyone! Send your stories to rhonda@roedererreunion.com.

We have been working hard on our Online Reunion Store, which is about to go live! We have some very exciting things, including both cookbook editions, T-shirts and a surprise item! You can also sign-up for our genealogy class there. Soon, a special newsletter will announce when you can start shopping! Stay tuned!

Of the more than 100 people already committed, we are proud to announce we have 3 more German family members joining us, bringing the total to 10 so far! We’ve also been in contact with descendants of two new branches who are excited to meet their new extended family! With the number of registrants growing and the excitement of horseracing fans anticipating the Breeder’s Cup (especially after the Triple Crown winner this year), hotel rooms are becoming very limited. So if you haven’t made your reservations yet, secure your room NOW!

Visit www.RoedererReunion.com for links to Reunion Registration, online payment, LODGING, past postings and more.

Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July, everyone! Enjoy those barbecues and fireworks as we celebrate our country and salute our ancestors. But most of all… enjoy your families!

It’s Summertime – So Let’s Get Cookin’!!

Another month closer to our reunion ― exactly 5 short months away!
The excitement has been building as we get closer to November… several  registrations a week, plans for a genealogy class and newly-found cousins. It just keeps getting better!

It’s Summertime, so let’s get COOKIN’!!!

We are a little more than halfway to our new goal of 250 recipes for our Roederer Family Heirloom Cookbook, Vol. II. In addition to the yummy recipes, many of you are including fascinating, family anecdotes. So if you have a story to share, certainly include it with your recipe. It makes the dish even tastier BEFORE it hits the table!

If you have already submitted a recipe and have an anecdote to add, it’s not too late –  just email it in! Better yet, if anyone has a family memory to share, we will have a special section of the cookbook (“Remember When”) devoted just to those special memories of loved ones past and present. Not everyone is a cook, but EVERYONE has a funny, touching or inspirational story to tell about family!

Here’s a sneak peek at one funny, family tale…
“Grandma wrote on the calendar every day that Grandpa drank beer! Always made me laugh! She would show everyone. Grandpa did not care!! He was never fazed one bit. She would always tell me & my dad. Grandma thought someone would stop him… not in this family!  Grandma called him ‘Pop’. So on the calendar it always read ‘Pop drank beer’. I wish I had that calendar.”

You’ll have to wait and get the cookbook to find out who “Pop” is and how he is related to you!

This is NOT just another cookbook, but a charming Family History told through the love of food and the love of family. All recipes are by a Roederer, a spouse or a descendant of a Roederer. The contributor’s relationship to their immigrant ancestor will also accompany each recipe.

We would like to have as many immigrant lines represented as possible. Potentially, there are 17 branches and currently we only have 9 of which sent in their family favorites. In the 2010 edition, we had many submissions from the families of the immigrant clans of George Phillip, Anna Maria R. Ettel, and Magdalena R. Kuhn. We’d love to include these branches again this year. So far, the Johannes Clan is leading the pack as the “master cooks” of all the Roederers.

Deadline is June 15th. So get those recipes, anecdotes and family memories in ASAP!!!
You can email our cookbook coordinator at patti.jako@gmail.com

Here is a family-treasured recipe from my great-grandmother to whet your appetites:

Jam Cake
Katherine “Katie” Christman Roederer (1867-1954)
wife of Christian K. Roederer, son of Christian

1 c. Butter
2 c. Sugar
4 Eggs
1 c. Blackberry Jam
1 Tbsp. Cocoa
1 c. Buttermilk
1/2 tsp. Salt
4 c. Flour
1 tsp. of each (Soda, Baking Powder, Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg)

Cream butter & sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating in between. Add jam, cocoa & milk. Sift all dry ingredients together; add to wet ingredients. Mix until blended. Pour into greased, floured 9×13″ pan. Bake at 350⁰ for 40-45 minutes. Cool and serve. Can top with glaze, if desired.

Over 100 of you took advantage of the Early Bird Special. Many of whom were with us at our 2010 reunion; others who have just found us and are eager to be a part of this exciting event. So far, besides our 7 special German visitors, we have family coming from all over the country ― CA, ND, FL, CO, TX, SC and yes, I even found cousins right here in New Orleans that will be joining us. Keep spreading the word! We don’t want to leave anyone out!

Many of you have asked about genealogy research – how to get started, where to search, and what the heck does ‘second cousin twice removed’ mean? One cousin called me asking, “How about giving a short course at the reunion? I’ll be the first to sign up!” Hmmm… What a splendid idea!! Looking for something to do for a couple of hours on Saturday before our German Feast?
Stay tuned for details.

If you haven’t reserved your hotel yet, NOW is the time to secure those rooms. The Derby is over and what a great race it was! Will Justify be our next Triple Crown winner? The next major horse racing event in Louisville is the Breeders’ Cup ― the same weekend as our reunion! Racing fans have already started booking hotel rooms. So don’t let them be the front runner and beat you out by a nose. Remember you can cancel without penalty 3 days prior to the event and receive a full registration refund before Oct 1. You can’t get better insurance than that! We want everyone at the reunion ― a guaranteed great time!

Visit www.RoedererReunion.com for links to Reunion Registration, online payment, LODGING, past postings and more.

That’s all of our news for now. Have a great summer kickoff and we’ll have lots more to share in July! I leave you with one more family favorite that is the perfect summer treat… Guten Appetit!

Early Bird Deadline Ending Soon!

Now is the time Louisville is deep in all the Derby festivities… picking out that perfect hat, making Derby Pies, rolling bourbon balls and harvesting all that mint for the juleps! Did you know that nearly 120,000 mint juleps are served at Churchill Downs on race day? That’s a lot of bourbon!

Don’t let April 30th slip away while you are knee-deep in all of those Derby Party preparations. The price for our exciting 3-day event goes up on May 1st. This will be your last chance to take advantage of this special, all-inclusive $85 price!

  • $60 – Sunday  (Day at the Races at Churchill Downs)

Please submit to Patti at patti.jako@gmail.com. We have received quite a few with accompanying stories, making those yummy recipes come to life before they are even prepared. Springtime – Early Bird Discount Extended

Spring has finally arrived! I hope we have all seen the last of the winter weather and we can now look forward to warm, sunny days and beautiful Spring flowers. As we enter this wonderful season and anticipate our reunion in November, we have much to share with you.

First, the Early Bird Price deadline has been extended through April 30th.

Second, we have received some requests for individual event pricing as some people won’t be able to attend all 3 events due to the Breeders’ Cup and other conflicts. To accommodate these requests, we have included the break-out pricing, as follows:

  • $80 – Friday / Saturday (Meet & Greet / German Feast)
  • $60 – Sunday (Day at the Races at Churchill Downs)
  • $110 – All 3 events

But you’ll be able to take advantage of the Early Bird Price of $85 for all 3 events now through April 30th.

Because of this new pricing option, we thought it only fair to extend this offer. The individual pricing will remain the same. For those of you who have already paid, let me know if this change alters your plans and you will be compensated accordingly.

We have so many things to share! We want as many of you there as possible to experience learning new family discoveries, meeting new cousins and all the wonderful surprises we have in store!

Registration forms – Please fill-out the registration form, even if you will be unable to join us. Click Reunion Registration. These forms will keep the database and Family Tree updated. The Family Tree is a living document that is ever-changing and we need YOUR help to keep it current. (PSST! I’ve heard through the grapevine that there may be a visual Family Tree at the Reunion. But don’t tell anyone….it’s one of the many surprises we have planned).

Volunteers – It takes quite a number of people to organize and bring an event of this size together. We have been blessed to have several volunteers come forward at this early stage to help. We would like to acknowledge them with a great big, heartfelt THANK YOU.

  • Scott Nesvold – Website design and maintenance
  • Emily Nesvold – T-shirts
  • Patti Jako – Roederer Heirloom Cookbook Vol 2. I know we will have many yummy recipes to try out. Please submit your family favorites to patti.jako@gmail.com. Patti still needs help inputting recipes. It’s fun and easy online input.
  • Tom/Janet Raderer and Traci Roederer Furness – Catering arrangements for Friday & Saturday events.
  • Linda Pennington – My co-organizer, my support system, newsletter editor, genealogist extraordinaire… and so much more! Linda was and IS the driving force behind this reunion!

The Linda Story – The circumstances behind how Linda and I met truly exemplifies why I am so passionate about genealogy and bringing families together! Believe it or not, Linda and I met very briefly for the first time at the 2010 Roederer Reunion. She and I had previously spoken on the phone comparing genealogical information on our Roederer ancestors; hers from Oberschopfheim and mine from Diersburg. It just so happened the timing worked out that she would be passing through Louisville on a drive from St. Louis. I encouraged her to stop by the Reunion and spend a few hours at the family picnic in Jeffersonville.

I noticed her sitting quietly by herself with her beautifully-presented family history binder on the Roederers of St. Louis (1830’s Oberschopfheim immigrants). We introduced ourselves and within the first few minutes of meeting, she and I had an immediate bond which has gotten stronger and stronger over these past 8 years. Our best guess at our closest familial relationship is a very distant 14th or 15th cousins! Since 2010, she has been to visit us in New Orleans and my husband, Brian, and I have been to St. Louis 4 times! She is now one of my dearest friends that perfectly fits my definition of what I call “family”! And it all happened because many years ago, I got this crazy idea to bring all of these Roederers together in one place!

Maybe you’ll find YOUR special “Linda” at the reunion too! There’s only one way to find out… see you in November!

Happy Mardi Gras!

While it is just another Tuesday everywhere else, here in New Orleans, it’s Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday”! A time full of pageantry, parades, catching beads, music, hiding behind the masks and just plain fun! To learn more about this celebration, see Mardi Gras History.

Did you know that the Fleur de Lis is the city symbol for both New Orleans and our host city, Louisville?  Another thing in common ― both cities are also known for their Southern Hospitality and hometown celebrations: The Kentucky Derby in Louisville and Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Plans are really taking shape for our reunion! Two huge announcements to share with everyone:

The Roederer Reunion 2018 website is now LIVE! Visit www.RoedererReunion.com. All reunion news in ONE place! Check out the schedule of events, registration form, convenient payment link, lodging options, area attractions and all previous newsletters (in case you missed any).  Check in with the website often, as more plans develop and exciting events are announced.

Registration forms have been flowing in and the majority have requested a Roederer Family Favorites Cookbook Vol. 2! You have spoken and we will deliver! For our 2010 reunion, many of you kindly shared your delicious family recipes with everyone. So we are once again requesting those family favorites. A limited number of the 2010 edition will be available for purchase.

Patti Jako has graciously agreed to be our Cookbook Coordinator. Please send your recipes (and family anecdotes) to patti.jako@gmail.com. Patti could also use 2-3 helping hands for inputting. It’s a fun, easy, online coordination. Anyone who would like to help out, Patti would love to hear from you.

Many thanks to those who have already submitted your registration forms and payments. It is looking like we are once again going to have a terrific turn-out! Keep those forms coming (even if you are not sure if you can attend). Click Reunion Registration.

Please don’t forget to take advantage of the Early Bird Special now through March 31st. Easy online payment links on the website or checks accepted, as well.

Once again, a gentle reminder for you out-of-towners ― book your hotel rooms early before the Breeder’s Cup crowd makes those rooms disappear.

And once again…HAPPY MARDI GRAS…to all!

Happy New Year – Registration Details!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Hope your year has started off well. It’s hard to believe that January has almost passed. That means that we are one month closer to our Roederer Reunion in November!

Much has happened since our last letter. Reunion plans are moving forward ― lots of activities, food and fun! Unique items are being gathered for the silent auction. Genealogy charts are being compiled, giving all a nice visual to see where we come from and how we are all connected.

But the biggest news that we want to share is that we now have 7 lovely people from Germany already booked at the hotel! More are considering to attend, so do stay tuned! We also have many of our non-Louisville relatives taking to heart the advice to reserve their rooms early. To date, 67 room nights have already been reserved. Many are coming early and staying longer to enjoy and explore the sights of Louisville and the surrounding areas.

With attendance growing rapidly, it is so important that you reserve your hotel room ASAP! Hotels have already started booking up (and raising rates) for the Breeders Cup weekend and we don’t want you to miss out on our reunion because you were unable to get a room.  Remember… you can always cancel your room, without penalty, 3 days prior to check-in. You have nothing to lose!

Another reason to not procrastinate ― take advantage of the EARLY BIRD SPECIAL deeply discounted registration fee. Payment details are on the registration form: CLICK HERE. Completing this form does not commit you to come to the reunion. We are updating the Roederer database and this information helps keep the database current. It takes only 5-6 minutes to fill-out this 4-page form. We really appreciate your help with this.

Website for RoedererReunion.com is coming soon! All reunion information in one place! Get news as it develops. All necessary links to maps, websites, reunion memorabilia and MORE!

As we leave January behind, we once again wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year. We look forward to seeing you in Louisville. There will be old friends from our past reunion and many new friends to meet. We will continue to keep you posted as exciting things develop.

And oh, by the way, we should let you know that we have some surprises in store for you in November. But, of course, you’ll have to attend the reunion to find out about those!
